Tár

I had the pleasure of being a consultant for the film Tár, about the fictional Lydia Tár, “one of the world’s leading conductors.” Filmed in Berlin with Cate Blanchett in the eponymous role, it will be released in the United States in October. Todd Field is the writer and director. The film’s score is by Hildur Guðnadóttir, first female composer to win an Academy Award.

Variety's review of the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival included the following:

She speaks, with astonishing eloquence and wit, of conducting as the marshaling of time itself, and of how the relationship between Gustav Mahler and his wife, Anna, influenced the composing of his grandly ominous and romantic Symphony No. 5, which she is about to record in Berlin.

In fact, the words Blanchett's character speaks--when she is speaking about music and conducting--are those of John Mauceri, who provided information to Todd Field when he was writing the screen play.
